History & Background:
The chemical structure of CBD was first elucidated in the 1930s by R.S. Cahn, but it wasn't until 1940 that R. Adams and his colleagues in the United States were able to successfully synthesize the cannabinoid in a lab.The medicinal derivative that comes from the cannabis plant wasn't recently discovered in the past century. People have known about CBD dating back to 2737 BC, when Chinese Emperor Sheng Nung first started using it in his tea to help with ailments like memory loss, malaria, and gout.
CBD in Hemp:
CBDA (cannabidiolic acid) is one of many compounds produced by cannabis and hemp. Abundant in the live plants of CBD varieties, it converts to the better known cannabinoid CBD (cannabidiol) over time and when exposed to heat.
CBD is not impairing, meaning it does not cause a “high.”
CBD can be derived from hemp or from non-hemp plants. Hemp is defined as any part of the cannabis sativa plant with no more than 0.3% of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the mind-altering substance in marijuana.
Forms of CBD:
CBD can be consumed in various forms, including oils, capsules, topicals, and edibles. CBD oils are the most common form and can be taken sublingually or mixed into food or drinks. Capsules provide a convenient and discreet way to consume CBD, while topicals such as creams and balms are applied directly to the skin. Edibles, such as gummies or chocolates, are a popular and tasty option for those looking to incorporate CBD into their daily routine.
Blending CBD with Other Compounds:
CBD can also be blended with other compounds found in the cannabis plant, such as THC or terpenes, to enhance its effects. This is known as the "entourage effect" and can provide a synergistic effect that enhances the therapeutic benefits of CBD. For example, CBD can help counteract the psychoactive effects of THC, making it more tolerable for those who may be sensitive to its effects.
Benefits of CBD:
In addition to relaxation and stress relief, CBD is being studied for a wide range of medical benefits. Some of the more well-studied applications of CBD include treatment of seizures, anxiety, and pain. Consumers may prefer a combination of THC and CBD as both cannabinoids have unique benefits to offer and may be more effective in treating certain symptoms like pain and insomnia. Consumers and CBD producers tout a variety of other medical benefits which are not as well studied.
Cultivars (strains) with higher-than-average concentrations of CBD:
HARLEQUIN
Perhaps the most famous high-CBD strain, Harlequin typically comes in at roughly a 5:2 CBD/THC ratio. Displaying a sativa-dominant uplift, it often imparts a very mild euphoric effect. It’s great for daytime activities while providing a mild and relaxing ride.
HARLE-TSU
Harle-Tsu, one of a few lovingly handcrafted strains created by the late Lawrence Ringo, is an outstandingly functional CBD cut. By combining Harlequin and Sour Tsunami, Harle-Tsu achieves a pleasant disposition without encumbering the consumer with strong sedation.
CANNA-TSU
Canna-Tsu is a more balanced CBD/THC strain that offers a unique bouquet of smells. With aromas of citrus and sweet earth, Canna-Tsu gives the CBD enthusiast a complex palate of flavor and terpenes to enjoy.
SOUR TSUNAMI
Created by the larger-than-life grower and activist Lawrence Ringo, Sour Tsunami was brought into being by combining Sour Diesel and NYC Diesel. This unlikely pair of stimulating plants bred the high-CBD phenotype that has since redefined the medicinal qualities of cannabis.
PENNYWISE
A genetic cross of Harlequin and Jack the Ripper. It synthesizes Jack the Ripper’s mental clarity and an even 1:1 CBD/THC to make a strain that is functional and enjoyable at almost any dose.
ACDC
Another fan favorite, ACDC averages around a 20:1 CBD/THC ratio. This makes the THC barely perceptible, if at all, and a great choice for daily users who want to reduce stress, discomfort, or tension with gentle and sustainable relief.
CANNATONIC
Averaging around a 2:1 CBD/THC ratio, this hybrid isn’t quite as sedative as the name suggests. It’s often described as an even-keeled strain, delivering medical benefits without the anxiousness and paranoia sometimes associated with high amounts of THC.
RINGO’S GIFT
Named for late activist and marijuana cultivator Lawrence Ringo, this high-CBD strain boasts an average 24:1 CBD/THC ratio. It’s a great choice for regular and gentle relief of discomfort and other stress-related symptoms.
SWEET AND SOUR WIDOW
Sweet and Sour Widow lands in the middle ground with a 1:1 CBD/THC ratio. This even split offers first-time cannabis consumers an enjoyable entry point to both THC and CBD without sending them into orbit. It also makes for good medicine while being slightly euphoric and stoney.
STEPHEN HAWKING KUSH
Stephen Hawking Kush offers mild, relaxing effects while doling out a healthy dose of CBD, too. This indica-dominant strain is one of the more unique CBD cuts out there, offering both heady and soothing effects.
Risks of CBD Use:
While CBD is generally considered safe, it can cause some adverse reactions in some individuals, such as dry mouth, diarrhea, and changes in appetite or weight. Additionally, CBD can interact with certain medications, so it is essential to consult with a healthcare professional before starting to use CBD.
